Department of Health —
Supporting Abu Dhabi’s digital transformation with a new website experience, and a scalable design system for increased government performance.
The Department of Health of Abu Dhabi is the regulatory body for healthcare across the Emirate. When I joined Brunswick Group’s design team, they were already collaborating with the Abu Dhabi Government (ADG) on building digital services and creating an integrated ADG website ecosystem.
Brunswick’s plan to upgrade the existing ADG applications was to create a new website experience and visual language that represents the Department of Health as a modern and pioneering health authority. I helped them consolidate the Department of Health’s value proposition into a clear statement to communicate effectively with the public, healthcare professionals, tourists, investors, and the press.
Considerations for right-to-left (RTL) languages
Upon joining the project, the Design Director had already established key design foundations, including typography, colour palette, and grid system, while the UX Designer had begun developing the website wireframes.
My initial focus was to design the homepage in both English and Arabic. Designing the Arabic version required careful consideration of RTL language principles. I ensured that all elements—text alignment, navigation, and layout—were optimised for RTL, including mirroring the interface to create a seamless and intuitive user experience for Arabic-speaking users.
Creating a cohesive design language
Building on the established design foundations, I focused on creating a cohesive visual identity that reflected the Department’s mission and values. As I developed the design language, I added new components to the design foundation and documented their behaviour to ensure consistency across the site.
I collaborated closely with the UX Designer to ensure our design solutions were user-centric and also addressed the needs of diverse stakeholders. This teamwork resulted in a modern, accessible website that effectively represents the Department of Health while enhancing the overall user experience.
Collaborating closely with the Design Director, we developed a component library based on website modules, which was subsequently documented by the UX Designer.
I also participated in meetings to offer guidance and assist developers in implementing the components within a bespoke CMS, which can now be easily expanded as the ADG departments evolve.
